Archaeological Sites

The territory of today’s Jagodina municipality contains numerous archaeological sites. At the foot of Đurđevo Hill, a large number of fossilized animal remains were found, as well as several settlements from prehistoric times, through Bronze and Iron Age settlements, to Roman settlements located along the road known as VIA MILITARIS. Most of the valuable archaeological excavations are exhibited in the Zavičajni Museum.

Churches and Monasteries: Jošanica, Manasija, Ravanica, New and Old Church

The must-visit places in Pomoravlje are certainly the monasteries. These parts of Central Serbia best testify to medieval history through the monasteries built during that period. Representatives of the Morava school found inspiration and models of medieval architectural culture in these buildings.

Jošanica Monastery

According to tradition, the Jošanica Monastery was founded by Prince Lazar. Starting from this folk legend, the stay of Captain Koča, and the hospital during the Serbian-Turkish wars, are just part of the rich history of this monastery in the gorge of the Jošanica River. 9 km from Jagodina, the center of spiritual, historical, and artistic monuments is a small single-nave church dedicated to St. Nicholas of Myra. The fresco painting, although quite damaged, is of great artistic and historical value.

Manasija Monastery

Probably the most significant monument of this period, the Manasija Monastery is the endowment of Despot Stefan Lazarević. It is located about thirty kilometers from Jagodina, near Despotovac. In addition to the exceptional artistic value of the church’s frescoes and the architectural beauty of the building, the monastery’s double defensive wall is impressive. The Resava copying school, which operated within the monastery, is of particular historical value.

Ravanica Monastery

Manastir Ravanica

As a stronghold in the fight against the Turks in the 18th century, the Ravanica Monastery suffered several times. The architectural characteristics, the inscribed cross base, five domes, and the alternating stone and brick elements of the Morava school are immediately visible on the church dedicated to the Ascension of the Lord. The monastery is located near the village of Senje near Ćuprija. The relics of the founder and great ruler, Prince Lazar, after centuries of relocation, have been in this monastery since 1989.
